Be on the lookout for the Gelatomobile (Picture courtesy of Kristin Gilbert).

Ahh, Ohio Valley summers. Sultry, sweaty and sticky (I’d complain, but that would go against the vow I took during the Polar Vortex to not talk bad about the heat).

The nice folks over at Gelato Gilberto have a solution to the summer woes. The gelato shop will give away 100 pints of the dessert starting today, July 1.

  2. A 5-minute survey helps save money on Kroger gas

September 5, 2013 by Ashlee Clark Thompson

The Hubs and I have been on our grown-up game. We’ve spent the past several months developing a budget for our household, which means a heck of a lot of staring at receipts. And I’ve discovered gold in these slips of paper.

At the bottom of most receipts, there’s a web address that customers can visit to fill out a survey about their experience. Most retailers, such as Target and Dollar General, will enter you for the chance to win a gift card to the store. But Kroger, dears, offers something a little more tangible — fuel points.

Kroger Plus Card members get 50 fuel points for filling out the survey at the bottom of the Kroger receipt. These fuel points translate into discounts on Kroger gas. You also get fuel points every time you make a Kroger purchase, so filling out the survey gives you a double helping of discounts on gas.

I know this is a ploy by an Evil Corporate Empire to get me to shop at their store. And I have had some legitimate beef with Kroger’s prices. HOWEVA, if I have to shop there for certain items, why not take an extra five minutes to get a discount on gas?

  3. Enjoy sweet discounts during the final stretch of Hometown Tourist Celebration Month

The Kentucky Derby feels like it happened yesterday, but somehow we made it in spitting distance of June. Where did May go? Did we do a time warp?

Fortunately, the month isn’t quite over, so we still have time to enjoy some of the perks of the Louisville Convention and Visitors Bureau’s Hometown Tourist Celebration. The purpose of the festivities is to get folks like me away from the computer and into the wilds of Kentuckiana to enjoy the local food and fun in our area. Plus, a lot of participating businesses will give you substantial discounts when you show your Kentucky, Indiana, local student or military ID.

Here are some of my favorite deals. Click here for a complete list of discounts.

I love learning, so imagine my delight when I read the line-up of classes available at the Louisville Free Public Library‘s How-To Festival this weekend.

The festival is made up of dozens of free classes that cover an impressive array of topics. This is the second year of the festival. The daylong event takes place Saturday, May 11, at the Main Branch of the library on York Street in Louisville.

Some of the topics that guest teachers will cover include how to make rockets, groom your pet, build a terrarium, take a conflict to small claims court, and much more. There are also a plentiful selection of food-related courses.

Here are some of the food-friendly classes I scoped out on the library’s website. Download a full schedule of classes here.

    • How to set a table — and encourage good manners and great conversation (I’ll need a bigger table first)
    • How to decorate mini-cupcakes — a series of quick lessons (Yumzies!)
    • How to make delicious no-knead bread (You had me at “no-knead”)
    • How to preserve food by canning — transforming seasonal fruits and vegetables to year-round staples, from jams to tomato sauce (One of my homemaker fantasies)
    • How to make the lima beans that make Mayan Café famous (This class might fill up fast. Those beans are famous.)
    • How to choose, sample and serve terrific cheeses (Does wine come with that class?)
    • How to make spectacular salads — three recipes with varied ingredients, techniques and dressings (Oooh, this will probably be more than just ranch and cheese.)

  6. Wild Eggs has all-you-can-eat pancakes this month. Challenge accepted.

    Pancakes from Wild Eggs.

February is National Pancake Month. I’m not one to shrug off seemingly unnecessary proclamations such as this, and neither is Wild Eggs.

In honor of this glorious month, the breakfast/lunch/brunch restaurant will offer all-you-can-eat pancakes $4.99 through February.

    Heck. Yeah.

I’m a frequent Wild Eggs patron on lazy Sunday afternoons. I tried their pancakes for the first time a few weeks ago, and I was smitten. I’ve been on a pancake kick ever since. I’ll even order a pancake as a side dish — I’m not ashamed. Wild Eggs serves their hot cakes big, buttery and fluffy. I agree with Michelle at Consuming Louisville — it’s hard to finish a regular order, let alone an unlimited supply.

    That doesn’t mean I won’t try.

Check out Wild Eggs’ Facebook page or website for more details. In the meantime, I’ll be practicing some pancake-eatin’ for my next visit.

Mary, one of my Moth StorySLAM buddies, getting a burger from Grind back in October.

**This giveaway is closed. Thanks for commenting!**

Sometime around the new year, the Ashlee Eats Facebook page hit a great milestone — 100 fans, baby.

I think that calls for a giveaway.

Liz and Jesse, the couple behind the Grind gourmet burger truck and favorite of Ashlee Eats readers, have offered up two vouchers for a blog giveaway, each worth one burger from the Grind truck. These would be great to use at Truckin’ Ain’t Easy, a food truck gathering at Apocalypse Brew Works on Friday, Jan. 25 (click here for more details).

It’s easy to win. Just answer this question:

What’s your favorite burger from Grind? If you haven’t had one, what kind of Grind burger would you like to taste?

For a chance to win one of the vouchers, leave a comment on this blog post or the Ashlee Eats Facebook page. Just one comment per person, please.

Post your comment by 11:59 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16. I will choose two winners (one voucher each) on Thursday.

And thanks for reading and liking the Facebook page!

  10. The downtown Vint Coffee shops are now Heine Brothers’, and they’re giving away coffee Wednesday

Ahh, a good cup of coffee.

    Well, color me surprised.

The Vint Coffee location I often visit at 516 W. Main Street next to Humana HQ has turned into a Heine Brothers’ coffeehouse. Ditto at the Vint location at 462 S. Fourth Street.

I was two seconds from being super confused until I remembered that this replacement had been in the works for months.

Heine and Vint announced that they were merging back in November 2011. As of Monday, the two downtown Vint locations carry the Heine Brothers’ name, Insider Louisville reports. The Frankfort Avenue Vint will stay the same.

To mark the occasion, the downtown Heine Brothers’ locations will offer buy one, get one free coffee on Wednesday, Jan. 9. I’ll drink to that.
